Shaking his head, the waiter went back to get the rest of Cyrus's dinner and Kyna said, "I've heard of rare, but really, Russ, that thing's going to get up and run the minute you try to cut it."
"I've been feeling a bit run down," he lied. "I heard rare meat is good for anemia."
To change the subject, Cyrus regaled Kyna with one of his bodyguard stories.
"I once took the daughter of an actor shopping."
"Anyone I might have heard of?" she asked.
The candle flame did magical things to her eyes.
"Probably. He was in a movie with Kurt Russell."
"Come on, who was it?"
Smiling a little secret half-smile, Cyrus shook his head. "Sorry. Anyway, she said she needed a new fall coat and wanted me to take her to the mall. She bought a forty-thousand-dollar mink coat and asked me to shoot the salesman when he wouldn't give her a monogrammed garment bag to carry it in."
"No!"
"I don't think she was serious."
Kyna broke up. "Come on!"
"Honest. Women are a mystery to me. When I think they're serious, they're kidding, and when I think they're kidding, they turn out to be as serious as a tax audit."
She knew he was flirting and she knew what he wanted her to say. "Big, strong boy like you, you must have lots of girls willing to teach you what a woman means."
"Not all that many." He grinned. "The day of the romantic is past."
"And you're a romantic?"
"Alas, a dinosaur. 'Tis why I felt such kinship with those old bones back at the park. One day some fresh-faced young couple will stand over my grave and read the sign 'Homo romanticus; species extinctkilled by women's lib.'"
"Oh ho, a chauvinist on top of everything else. I should have known."
